For a decade running from 1982 onwards, Telford United became the most feared of FA Cup giantkillers, drawing with or beating no less than 15 league clubs as they repeatedly upset the form books and proved that the gap between league and non-league was small. These were no flukes either. The teams assembled by manager Stan Storton mercilessly tore apart their opponents and hammered in the goals: 3 against Stockport, Northampton, Darlington and Burnley; 4 on both Preston's and Rochdale's home turf. In 1985, Telford became one of only 9 non-league clubs to reach the 5th round, where they came up against the best team in England at the time - table-topping Everton. Even these giants were unable to break down the team at first, with Telford holding out for an hour before Everton scored. To this day, Telford hold the record for the largest ever away following at an FA Cup game because of the 11,000 supporters that made the trip to Goodison Park that day. Telford's greatest ever FA Cup victory occurred in the 3rd round in 2004, when, after soundly beating Brentford 3-0 in the previous round, a 4th minute Lee Mills header was enough to see off Crewe Alexandra at their own ground.
