In June this year, TUST on behalf of AFC Telford United and The Borough of Telford and Wrekin Council together appointed Sean Parrish as Community Liaison Officer. He is now a key member of the Sports Development Team that delivers training and coaching sessions to youngsters around Telford. Club and Interim TUST Chairman, Lee Carter said “It is a fabulous step forward and demonstrates the commitment of AFC Telford United to be a club at the heart of its community”. Thanks to the sponsorship of TUST, there are up to 20 members of staff now working throughout the local community who are badged jointly as Borough of Telford and Wrekin Council/AFC Telford United coaching staff. Lee added “When the Trust started planning this activity, it was planning to go it alone but the support of the council means that the joint project is far more effective.” This scheme is the first initiative that Interim Trust Board members have undertaken and it is part funded by money the Supporters Trust has raised from a variety of means. Keen to underpin the Club’s position in the community of Telford and Wrekin, TUST has committed funds contributed by the fans of the Club via the Standing Order scheme. The generosity and loyalty of these contributors’ means that the escalating profile of AFC Telford United not only appeal to its fans but also those within the wider community. Sean, alongside other well-known Telford fan’s favourite David Andrewartha, has already been involved in coaching young people during school time, at after-school clubs and in holiday periods. He has started working towards his UEFA A Coaching badge and hopes to complete it next summer. Interim Trust Board Member Diane Morris commented, “Sean displays the same level of influence and commitment to the youngsters he coaches as he does when he plays for the football club”. The coaching sessions involve learning new football skills, the importance of personal discipline, promoting the desire to play in a team and the rewards for commitment to sport. Diane added, “In the sessions I’ve seen, all the children involved have gone away tired, and very happy. Sean is an excellent ambassador for the Club and many of the youngsters he’s coached have since come along to see him play for Telford.” Fellow Interim Trust member, David Embery said, “The official launch of this scheme is a proud day for everyone involved at AFC Telford United. The Supporters Trust is keen to promote the opportunities available to everyone. This is a unique scheme and the hard work and determination of Interim Trust Board members together with the Sports Development Officers have finally paid off.” The programme of activities takes place across schools and youth groups throughout the Borough and it is hoped that gradually all schools will be given the opportunity to take part. | |
